Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (And Other Lies)

Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (And Other Lies): Amazing Women on What the F-Word Means to Them by Scarlett Curtis My rating: 5 of 5 stars I was reading The Art of Fact for my course when this book became available for pick up at my local library. If you haven’t read my review on the former, it might explain a lot as to way I chose to ignore my homework and read this one in less than 24 hours instead. I was angry at the way racial minorities and women were represented in The Art of Fact and Feminists Don’t Wear Pink turned out to be a very welcomed source…

Gold Rush Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Nellie Cashman

Gold Rush Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Nellie Cashman by Thora Kerr Illing My rating: 1 of 5 stars * Last semester I took a creative non-fiction course; the last course I needed for my double major and before I started research for my thesis. In this course, the prof wanted us to read a “creative non-fiction” book, i.e. a biography/memoir, and write a review on it. Below is the review I handed in for marking, with only minor changes. I admit, this may not be my best work, but my prof was of the opinion that my writing was sloppy, unclear, unfocused and in need of major editing. I…

Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions

Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie My rating: 5 of 5 stars I found a digital copy of this book on my phone, although I’m not sure how or when it got there. I started reading it immediately after finishing Adichie’s We should all be feminists and I’m more and more impressed and intrigued by her writing. It was a quick, honest and candid read that addressed the many gender issues that are still so prevalent in today’s world, without placing any blame. Instead the author suggests possible ways to raise girls to be independent, confident and self-reliant. Overall, I hope more people…

    50 Jahre Onkel Dagobert

50 Jahre Onkel Dagobert by Walt Disney Company My rating: 2 of 5 stars This is another volume I found among my mother’s old collection and decided to take home with me. Considering its shiny gold cover and the title stating a celebration of 50 years of Uncle Scrooge comics, I should have remember reading this one a lot when I was younger, but I didn’t. There weren’t many stories in this one, only 7 all together. Two of those were Mickey Mouse stories, but luckily, one of them was only a few pages long. For volume #233 of this series, I said that most of the comics lacked depth.…

    We Should All Be Feminists

We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie My rating: 5 of 5 stars I’m slowly beginning to realize that my research for my graduate thesis is taking me in a direction I had no idea it could take me; the direction of feminist theory. I had hoped I could address my topic without venturing into this territory, not because I don’t like the subject, on the contrary, it is because I am afraid I will lose myself in it. In and of itself this isn’t bad, but when you have already told your supervisor the topic of your thesis and then drop that kind of change on him,…

Duck Avenger New Adventures, Book 2

Duck Avenger New Adventures, Book 2 by Rodolfo Cimino My rating: 5 of 5 stars I don’t know how it is possible, but this volume was even better than the first, and the first was pretty darn perfect. The adventure takes Duck Avenger to new places and he faces some interesting enemies. The story continues, while introducing new side stories, that still all tie in together to the main plot. Lots of intrigue, lots of high-tech gadgets with a side of Donald’s signature hint of sarcasm. I was able to get a digital edition on Amazon on sale. I’m wondering, book 3 is also on sale, I mean who needs…

Duck Avenger New Adventures, Book 1

Duck Avenger New Adventures, Book 1 by Alessandro Sisti My rating: 5 of 5 stars I have been reading the German version of Duck Avenger, Phantomias, for a few years now and was very excited when my husband gave me this first book of the Duck Avenger’s newest stories in English for Christmas. The art style is very modern compared to the older, almost classic, German Phantomias comics I am used to. The frames of each scene sometimes overlap, are not perfectly organized to fit only up to 6 frames per page, and therefore create a whole new reading experience that brings the story and the action much closer to…

    The Raven’s Tale

The Raven’s Tale by Cat Winters My rating: 3 of 5 stars I finally had the chance to read Cat Winters’ new book The Raven’s Tale. I found it to be extraordinarily dark, making my skin crawl with every page. I don’t know much about Edgar Allen Poe. I had to analyze one of his shorter stories, Ligeia for my Gothic Literature course last fall, I read a manga version of The Tell Tale Heart and obviously saw The Simpsons version of The Raven many years ago, but Poe has always been a creator of dark tales that I could only stomach in very small dosages. And this comes from…

    Jessica Jones: Alias, Vol. 1

Jessica Jones: Alias, Vol. 1 by Brian Michael Bendis My rating: 1 of 5 stars I love the Netflix series Jessica Jones and decided to borrow this volume from my local library while waiting for the next season to come out. Well, let me tell you: this was pretty awful. Why? You may ask. Let me count the ways: The dialogue was horrendous. I know the writers tried to make it come across naturally and all, but every speech bubble contained many words repeated over and over again to signify stuttering or hesitation. It’s effective when used sparingly, but this just stopped any form of flow the dialogue could have…

Zeit ist Geld (Lustiges Taschenbuch, #233)

Zeit ist Geld by Walt Disney Company My rating: 3 of 5 stars I went through my mom’s old comics during my latest visit to her and decided to take some of the volumes back home with me. Among them was this one, which I had overlooked during previous perusals through her comic collection. I remember reading it on many occasions when I was little. It is a fast read and I noticed something peculiar about the way these stories were constructed. The individual stories seemed short. They were of regular page length, but the amount of plot detail and world building were kept to a minimum. There wasn’t much…
