Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The Gist

Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six by Lisa Unger falls short of its potential, delivering a unremarkable thriller experience. Despite the promise of a gripping premise, the execution of the novel fails to captivate readers, leaving them feeling underwhelmed and disappointed.

The Details

The story follows a group of friends who embark on a weekend getaway to a secluded cabin in the woods, hoping to escape their troubles and reconnect with one another. However, their idyllic retreat takes a sinister turn when they discover a series of dark secrets. As tensions rise and paranoia sets in, the friends are forced to confront their own demons.

One of the novel’s major shortcomings is its reliance on tired and clichéd tropes. From the creepy cabin in the woods to the group of friends with dark secrets, the story feels like a rehash of familiar thriller conventions, offering little in the way of originality or innovation. As a result, the plot feels predictable and formulaic, failing to surprise or intrigue readers in any meaningful way.

Additionally, the characters in Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six are thinly drawn and lacking in depth. Despite their troubled pasts and complicated relationships, they never fully come to life on the page, leaving readers feeling disconnected and uninvested in their fates. As the story unfolds, their actions and motivations feel forced and contrived, making it difficult for readers to empathize with their struggles or root for their success.

Also, this constant “look what we can afford” commentary got old and annoying very quickly.

The Verdict

Overall, Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is a forgettable and uninspired thriller that fails to leave a lasting impression. With its tired tropes, dumb characters, and uneven pacing, Lisa Unger’s novel falls short of delivering the suspense and excitement readers expect from the genre.
