The Debutantes by Olivia Worley Worth Reading? Honest Review (ARC)

The DebutantesThe Debutantes by Olivia Worley
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of The Debutantes in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The Gist

I really wanted to like The Debutantes by Olivia Worley. The cover is striking, the premise sounded dramatic, and early comparisons to books like Pretty Little Liars had me intrigued. As a fan of elite drama and twisty secrets, I had high hopes going into this review of The Debutantes. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite deliver.

The Details

Unfortunately, this book didn’t live up to the hype. The pacing was painfully slow. I found myself waiting and waiting for something to happen. But every time the story seemed ready to pick up, it sank back into slow scenes and vague dialogue. I kept flipping pages, hoping for that “aha” moment. It never came.

The strangest part is that I had a specific reason for rating it so low. But like the story itself, the reason was forgettable. That pretty much sums up how I feel about the entire book. It wasn’t awful. It wasn’t shocking. The story was just… dull.

The writing isn’t bad, but the plot lacked tension. The drama wasn’t juicy enough to be fun, and the mystery didn’t feel urgent. I had a hard time connecting with the characters. No one stood out. There weren’t any messy personalities to love or hate. Everyone blended into the same polished, predictable mold.

And while the vibe did give off Pretty Little Liars energy—rich girls with secrets, a glossy social world, danger simmering beneath the surface—it never delivered the thrills. It felt like a watered-down version. I wanted scandal and suspense. What I got was slow-moving conversations and a story that lost its grip before it ever really started.

The setting didn’t feel alive. The stakes didn’t feel real. The whole book read like it was trying to be more complicated than it needed to be. By the end, I just felt tired. Not because I’d been through a whirlwind of emotions, but because I was ready for it to be over.

The Verdict

I’m giving it two stars instead of one because I do think some readers might enjoy the style. If you like slow-burn, character-driven mysteries with a touch of elite drama, this might work for you. But if you’re looking for something sharp, fast-paced, and twisty, this probably isn’t it.

The Debutantes had potential, but for me, it missed the mark. I’ll be reaching for something a bit more gripping next time.
