Twilight

Twilight (Twilight, #1)Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Alright, here it goes. I never thought I would voluntarily read Twilight, but I did and I don’t know how I really feel about it. The movies were suggested viewing for my vampire/zombie course; I had watched them years before while recovering from surgery. I found them absolutely hilarious and looking back I assumed it was because of the painkillers I was on. So, about a month ago I decided to give the movies another shot, clear headed and viewing them as someone doing research. They were still quite funny even the second time around and I began to grow slightly frustrated, because I felt parts of the story were only glossed over and didn’t provide enough explanation. I requested Twilight from my local library. When the copy was finally available I had to return it right away as it was falling apart in my hands. Looks like readers weren’t messing around when it comes to sparkling vampires.
I hope I can include a photo I took of my copy, which has countless dog-eared pages, each one containing references to an unhealthy or abusive relationship between Bella and Edward. What puzzles me the most is Bella’s character. When Edward isn’t around she proves to have a relatively good head on her shoulders. She keeps the house on her own, she cooks and cares for herself and her father and is able to keep up with her schoolwork. So why does she act so foolish whenever Edward is around. This goes beyond the typical first love confusion. She knows what she wants and goes after it, I have to give her that. It’s just how she goes about it that has me scratching my head in disbelief.
The entire story is narrated from Bella’s point of view and is probably the only reason I kept reading it. It felt like looking into the sun, it hurt, but I couldn’t look away.
I could go on and on, but I’ll save some of my thoughts for the remaining installments in this saga, which, let’s face I will finish sooner rather than later.
